What is the well-being of Ukrainian children in Denmark?
This is the question our Danish-Ukrainian research team from the University of Copenhagen and the Rockwool Foundation Research Unit is exploring. We aim to better understand how Ukrainian children are faring and what their everyday lives are like in Denmark.
What is the purpose of the study?
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, more than 40,000 Ukrainians have immigrated to Denmark. Both children and adults may have had potentially traumatic experiences.
We aim to understand how Ukrainian children can be best supported in order to thrive. To this end, we are conducting a large-scale survey among Ukrainian children and adolescents living in Denmark. Our goal is to generate knowledge that will enable Danish policymakers and municipal practitioners to make well-informed decisions.
Among other things, we focus on the children’s schooling, their sense of belonging in Denmark, their social networks, their self-perception, and their thoughts about the future.

Who is invited, and how will the study be conducted?
The survey is nationwide and represents the largest study of Ukrainian children and adolescents in Denmark. All children and young people aged 9 to 20 who arrived in Denmark between February 2022 and June 2024 are invited to participate.
Experienced interviewers will travel across Denmark to visit approximately 3,100 children aged 9 to 14. The children will complete a computer-based questionnaire on their own. All questions have been translated into Ukrainian and Russian, and the children can also have the questions read aloud through headphones if they prefer.
A similar number of young people aged 15 to 20 will be invited to take part in a corresponding online survey.
Statistics Denmark is conducting the study on behalf of the research team. The data collection will take place between October 2025 and February 2026.

When will the results be available, and how will the data be handled?
We expect to present the first results during the spring of 2026.
All data will be treated with strict confidentiality. The results of the study will only be published in a way that ensures no individual respondents can be identified.

Since 2022, adult Ukrainians have been invited to share their experiences of life in Denmark. By combining insights from both adults and children, we can gain a more complete understanding of how Ukrainians experience their encounter with Denmark.
